I've always thought the best moments in life are the ones you never planned.

Not the headline attractions. Not the places that make the front cover of a travel brochure.

The little ones.

The moments that happen because you took a different street, stayed five minutes longer, or simply said "yes" when you hadn't intended to.

Whenever I think about Japan, that's what comes to mind.

Of course, there are the icons. Tokyo glowing beneath a sea of neon lights. Kyoto's centuries-old temples. Mount Fuji standing perfectly against the skyline. And if you're a skier, there's the legendary powder snow, mountain villages and steaming onsens waiting at the end of the day.

They're incredible for a reason.

But ask someone who's fallen in love with Japan, and chances are they won't start by talking about any of those places.

They'll tell you about the tiny sushi restaurant hidden down a narrow laneway where there were only eight seats and no English menu. They'll remember the café where every cup of coffee was poured so carefully it felt more like a ceremony than a morning routine.

They'll talk about wandering through an evening market in Osaka, finding a whisky distillery tucked into the mountains, or discovering a tiny jazz bar that's been owned by the same family for decades.

Those are the stories people bring home.

And I've realised that's true of life as much as it is of travel.

The moments we remember most are rarely the ones we carefully scheduled.

They're the discoveries.

The unexpected conversations.

The places we almost walked past.

That's probably why cruising through Japan has always appealed to me.

Most people think a cruise is simply another way to get from one destination to the next.

But Japan by sea feels different.

You wake each morning somewhere new. One day you're looking across Yokohama's skyline. A few mornings later you're walking through Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park. Then you're tasting fresh seafood in Hakodate, exploring Kochi's castles or stepping ashore in smaller ports that many international visitors never experience.

You don't spend your holiday packing and unpacking.

Instead, each sunrise quietly asks the same question:

"I wonder what you'll discover today?"

I like that.

Because I think we're all looking for those moments.

Not just when we travel, but every day.
